SBAl66 understanding of this last remark, it is important to know that in the barracks two soldiers had to share one bed or bed box. The hospital was housed in the eastern and southern wings of the monastery. The church was used as arsenal of the garrison. In the course of the eighteenth century, during the period when Adrien Pelerin was physician-director, the institution is praised several times for the spacious wards, the promenades and the toilets that drained into the Jeker. Reports from Pelerin show that rounds and hand-over were well organised. In summer the medicinae doctor had rounds at eight a.m. and in winter at 9 a.m. Preferably, new patients presented before rounds. When they were treated by the doctor or surgeon of the regiment, this colleague was also expected to attend the first rounds in order to hand over the patient. Only if they were prevented from being present for ‘legal reasons’, were they allowed to hand over the case in writing. These colleagues were also advised to come to the hospital on Johannes Hengstman as barber-surgeon. The barber-surgeon was allowed to employ an assistant or servant and the receiver was allowed to employ a cook, two caretakers and two maids. In the course of 1680, part of the buildings of the friars minor could be used for the hospital. The military garrison hospital of Maastricht was the first institution of its kind in the Republic. The hospital was mainly intended for unmarried soldiers. Because they lived in the barracks where there were no women or servants to look after them, it was thought that when they were sick they ‘would be very miserable (…) and due to their disease inconvenience and infect their roommates’.
