Preface 7 Twenty-five years ago, in 1986, the Maastricht academic hospital opened its doors for the very first time. This event was preceded by ten centuries of intramural health care. In this anniversary year the Board of Directors of what is now Maastricht University Medical Center+ commissioned this book which describes the history of health care in Maastricht. The editors have chosen to describe the history of the main hospices and hospitals in the town of Maastricht. Obviously, the focus on intramural care implies that important aspects of the history of medicine have been neglected. Starting from the Roman Trajectum ad Mosam, eight chronological episodes are described, illustrating the main trajectory of health care in Maastricht from Roman times to the present day. Patients, diseases, hospital care and doctors are presented against the backdrop of the town’s history and the history of health care in Europe. Each episode starts with seminal developments in the city and in health care. Some windows will be opened to show a view of the people, buildings and institutions that the editors deemed essential for health care in Maastricht at a particular time. The history tells about pilgrims, garrisons, public anatomy lessons, nuns and monks, the first X-rays in the Netherlands, brave surgeons and the ideas underpinning the establishment of the eighth Dutch faculty of medicine. This history is also the story of saints and the statutes of the Sint-Servaas hospice, the oldest hospice in the Netherlands dating back as far as the tenth century. The uninterrupted sequence from Sint Servaas hospice, Calvariënberg hospitals, Sint Annadal hospital and the Maastricht academic hospital are signposts on the journey through history which culminated in the Maastricht University Medical Center+.
