The garrison hospital and the monastery of the friars minor, with a maximum capacity of seven hundred patients, were unable to accommodate such numbers. Therefore, six ‘extraordinary’ hospitals were set up for wounded troops, while the regular military hospital was to take care of the sick. According to the plans, the military surgeons would be divided into three or four groups, which would be on duty in rotations. They had to treat all wounded without discrimination irrespective of their person or nationality. On 13 April, an official order of the garrison announced that medicinae doctor Pelerin and surgeon- major Hoffman were placed in charge of all surgeons in the garrison. The surgeons were divided into surgeon- majors, aide-majors and friars, probably according to education and qualities. After the battle commenced in the night of 16 April the first troops were wounded. They were taken to the ‘large hospital’ in the Jesuit monastery. This monastery, situated on the corner of
